Two new Moto handsets outed: say hello to the RIZR Z10 and ROKR E8

Motorola is expecting a couple new and rather glossy additions to its family, namely the RIZR Z10 (pictured on left) and the ROKR E8. The E8's face will between various modes based on what you're doing, from keypad to music controls for example, it also has some tactile feedback so you know you've actually input something on its smooth black surface. The ROKR E8 has a multi function "Omega Wheel" for zooming through your tunes and navigating, 2GB of internal storage, expansion via microSD, and the sad word -- rumor of course, so we can hold out hope -- that it won't feature 3G connectivity. The RIZR Z10 is a Symbian 9.02 handset sporting the ever so lovely UIQ 3.2 interface, quad-band GSM / EDGE, HSDPA in some alien frequency, a 3.2 megapixel shooter, 90MB of internal storage with the old standby, microSD, if you need more space. The E8 should be landing Q1 of 2008, and the Z10 should be shipping Q4 this year for round about €400 (about $550).

Why would I pay $550 for this thing?
Satish @ Sep 18th 2007 2:08PM

MEH!

Sorry to say it Moto, but those Red Fruit guys (cause we all have you know what fatigue), have "Raised the device Bar"!
riggs @ Sep 18th 2007 3:52PM

Innovative design from moto and a reasonable price for e8!!! Way to go moto
HineyWipe @ Sep 18th 2007 2:37PM
Need a RUBR for that RIZR in your pocket?
aron @ Sep 18th 2007 2:39PM
The RIZR looks pretty slick. I like the back on that thing. Gotta admit the names are pretty stupid though..
boolean22 @ Sep 18th 2007 3:16PM
The E8 ROCKS... =P
The z10 is a symbian smartphone, it's well priced w/o contract. The concept of the E8 is good, and innovative. Things look a lot better when you get that "omg-why-did-they-took-so-long?" feeling.
boolean22 @ Sep 18th 2007 3:18PM
And I don't thing that is all said and done with a fullscreen phone. That's not the most efficient design. This thing is rugged, and have a decent screen.

We obviously aren't looking at the same front page...
"say hello to the RIZR Z10 and ROKR E8"
How about I say, "Your naming scheme still isn't cute, and those are kinda ugly" instead?
dj-kenpo @ Sep 18th 2007 3:29PM
listening to readers?
are you stupid?
this has like 12 comments.
EVERY last apple post has 60-100+ comments attached. they're listening via comments as votes, not by people like you whining. it becomes clear to ANYONE what articles people are MOST interested in.

$49.00 dollars cheaper then the iphone at launch. Where's the outrage?
ryan @ Sep 18th 2007 4:33PM
personally, I think its about time for motorola to move on from the R(vowel)(consonant)R naming scheme. It's like they're riding this name straight into the ground.
nikster @ Sep 18th 2007 7:32PM
The problem with Moto is that they have no ideas. They had the RAZR which was the first new idea that they had in 10 years. And they haven't had a single new idea since then - witness the new RIZR and ROKRs.
Something that has baffled me for the last decade is why Motorola as a big company with lots of money, can't make a nice design. I am thinking Mr. Jobs may be right when he said "product design isn't as easy as writing a check".
Then again, Moto has been around for a long time, and they seem to be able to sell their stuff no matter what - maybe selling ugly just works for them.

about time we organised a boycott on anything without 3g, and told these companies where to get off.
Paris @ Sep 18th 2007 7:10PM
Unfortunately a lot of people don't know what 3G is. Some think its just a gimmick for video phoning and that's why they buy 2G phones.
Look at the iphone. People will be buying it in UK and have a GPRS connection. Ridiculous.
David @ Sep 18th 2007 5:00PM
Nice looking phones. Wouldn't pay that much for one though.

Although you people hate Apple articles, they seems to generate the most comments. Even if half of them are "I hate Apple" comments. Not that there's anything wrong with that, since it let's out some of your angst and probably annoys Apple fanboys to no end.
But are these Motorola phones all that interesting at all? Motorola is a has-been company. Not even worth commenting about. Nobody really cares one way or another about Moto handsets and anyway most of the comments were unfavorable.
I would imagine Engadget wants to generate some response rather than post articles that hardly anyone is interested in. Unfair, but that's how things are in the online world.
Cole @ Sep 18th 2007 5:43PM
Will the z10 even be sold in US with a service provider, the z8 which looked better never did.
JRM @ Sep 18th 2007 9:35PM
This is one of those times where I`m glad I live in Japan. Those motorola phones SUCK! Like, I wouldnt have believed it had I not crossed the pacific.
Stephen @ Sep 18th 2007 10:59PM
Amongst all of this Motorola hate, can we not at least appreciate the E8 for its morphing keypad? This is as close as a mobile phone has gotten to the fanboy favorite Optimus Maximus keyboard, using an actual keypad and not a full touch screen.
Again, if Moto isn't worth commenting about, why does everyone do so with such regularity? It's almost ironic because i'm pretty sure at least 75% of commentors use the free from the carrier phone.
moe @ Sep 18th 2007 11:02PM
yet another rokr dead before it even comes out. the w800i killed the first one the w960i will kill this one, actually most of the walkman lineup still betters it.
JCA @ Sep 19th 2007 6:29AM
It depends what you mean by design. If you are talking hardware and the fact that it doesn't have 3G, well ok i'll give you a little bit there. Although u have to remember that the E8 is a fashion phone, not meant to truly satisfy your inner geek.
Before I received my wonderful layoff papers from Moto I had a friend who was working on the E8. If we are talking about Industrial Design, this thing is anything but dated. The morphing keypad is amazing. It will have proximity sensors which will make the phone light up when your hand moves near it. This thing was sweet looking....even 6 months ago. Just wait.

Did somebody say "Knight Rider"
