Jablotron's GDP-02 unportable cellphone for the elderly
A Czech company named Jablotron announced their new cellphone on Monday. If it doesn't
look like any other GSM handset you've ever seen, that's because the GDP-02 "Grand" is really a desktop phone.
Designed for elderly users who have difficulty with smaller phones, the phone features an illuminated display and a
QWERTY keypad to allow users to send and receive text messages in addition to making calls. The catch is that since
it's a desktop phone it's more or less the opposite of portable, though for a lot of old people not being able to bring
their cellie to the mall might not be a problem.

What better way to use your cell service at home? :) Then you can TRULY get rid of your landline! Why not add it as a second line to a multi-line plan? :)

I think their niche market are areas in the developing world that don't have good landline access .... this will be much cheaper than a cell ... and harder to loose. Cool stuff ... such a simple concept is gonna sell a lot of phones ...

If this has an external antenna, it would be great for RVs, etc

It makes a ton of sense in even the better developed parts of eastern Europe (like the Czech Republic). In a lot of those countries, getting a landline put in is much more expensive than buying a cellphone. Even a lot of middle-aged Germans just use their "Handys".

Finally! They'll have a market in my home, as a backup to the IP-phone...

I Denmark there's a cellphone company that offers a GSM plan that includes a "free zone" where there's no charge for calls. I.e. calls made from your home, or rather calls made via the specific cell network antenna that's nearest to your home. This phone would be perfect for that - practically free calls for ever!

Kinda cool for RVs and camping and stuff but why not just bring a normal cellphone? I mean... You shouldn't go camping if you can't pinpoint the dials on a normal cellphone but for RVs this is a very cool solution. (Well not technically COOL but you know... useful.)
