Nokia shows off Haptikos tactile touch screen technology
Apple's already shown its interest in tactile touch screens, but it looks like Nokia is a bit further along in its own touchy feely endeavor, with it now showing off a prototype of its so-called "Haptikos" system. According to Red Ferret, Nokia's system is also a good deal more advanced than some similar ones already on the market, with it actually allowing for a 0.1 mm movement in the screen itself. That, combined with a pair of sensor pads under the screen, supposedly allows it to "mimic exactly the sensation of pressing a real key," complete with a "clunky click and tactile snap." What's more, it seems that the technology isn't all that far off, with Nokia's upcoming S60 handset apparently first in line to get it.

These tactile keyboards are interesting, but how will they stand up over time? I've seen a ton of used keyboard where they key labels are almost illegible from use...I can't imagine these touchscreens will fare very well.

A touchscreen and a printed-on-plastic characters are a tiny little bit different I think.
Sounds REALLY interesting, though!
"Nokia's upcoming S60 handset apparently first in line to get it."
Erm...S60 is a platform. So that sentence is a *tiny* bit ambiguous...

Just use a screen protector. My old Vx's touchscreen still looks good because of it.

Whats the big deal with the tactile touchscreens lately? Alpine had this in their head units a long time ago.

I think these ones are slightly more advanced, as well as, omg, how sick would it be to have a phone that did that as well as the article describes!

The tactile feedback ts is interesting but I really want to get my hand on that new N810 standing next to the ts.

With that red frame the first thing I thought was, "Hey, look at that Etch-a-Sketch next to the Nokia 770 and 810."

This is great news! I've been wondering when someone would come out with a technology like this. Is this the beginning of the end of the physical thumb board?

So did they mod a 770 or 810 with such a screen or is it the picture frame next to it?
Kozzi @ Nov 6th 2007 4:08PM
HAH ! No tactile touch screen for N800, just joking but damn it would be cool if N810 has this tactile screen.
