Update: I found 1.1.1 can enter Japanese on Safari (but no other applet), IF web form attribute 'lang' is set to 'ja', and once it changes Japanese keyboard, we can continue using it on different forms/pages until Safari is closed.
Not really practical solution though. Most web forms don't specify this attribute (not even Google Japan's home page), and most non 'ja' forms are perfectly fine to enter Japanese. It's still better than nothing but I'd be happier if we're given manual international keyboard option, since it's not perfect world.
Other issue is, it's smart maybe but painfully slow. It's just unbelievable.
