iPhone firmware 1.1.1 released, WiFi Music Store included
What goodies does Apple have in store for us this time around? Quite a few, we'd say! Follow the break for more!
[Thanks, JS]
Update: We deleted installer.app on ours and kicked off the update, things are taking a while but no obvious problems yet. Stay tuned.
Update 2: Success! The phone's restarting now.
Update 3: WiFi Music Store, check. New calculator icon to match the iPod touch, check. Phone had to be reactivated.
Update 4: We're hearing numerous reports of "Incorrect SIM" errors on unlocked iPhones after the update -- user beware!

Hooray, hooray!!
LiQuiD_FuSioN @ Sep 27th 2007 2:31PM
Oh man, this isn't right!
I thought the title read "iPod (Classic) firmware 1.1.1 released"! :-(
But, I'm still glad to see that Apple is updating it finally. Updates are always nice to have! ;)

Does this include the International Keyboards? I've been waiting for Japanese...
wakanya @ Sep 27th 2007 9:57PM
No Japanese keyboard. No international keyboard.
Even worse, Japanese font has been changed to very fancy font.
Only 17 years old girls like such foolish font.
Charliecharlos @ Sep 28th 2007 2:25PM
Actually, though there are no international keyboards, accents and other letter modifiers have been added in the latest update. I found it by mistake and holding the letter i longer than I should. So if one holds the vowels, S, Z, C, and N a side panel will appear in order for one to select the accent wanted.
wakanya @ Sep 29th 2007 9:05AM
Update: I found 1.1.1 can enter Japanese on Safari (but no other applet), IF web form attribute 'lang' is set to 'ja', and once it changes Japanese keyboard, we can continue using it on different forms/pages until Safari is closed.
Not really practical solution though. Most web forms don't specify this attribute (not even Google Japan's home page), and most non 'ja' forms are perfectly fine to enter Japanese. It's still better than nothing but I'd be happier if we're given manual international keyboard option, since it's not perfect world.
Other issue is, it's smart maybe but painfully slow. It's just unbelievable.

I'm afraid to update my iphone. Please post if it ruins your iphone that has hacks on it.
Joe @ Sep 27th 2007 2:32PM
It's not bricked. It's also not unlocked anymore.
spass @ Sep 27th 2007 2:03PM
Is bricking your iUnlocked iPhone included?
Dan @ Sep 27th 2007 2:03PM
Does it break the Jailbreak access? (first?)
ferg @ Oct 1st 2007 9:59PM
Iphone 1.1.1 will brick all iphones, as well as remove all 3rd party apps. Jailbreak will not work either, so forget your hacked ringtones.
Software people need to develop another hack to get around this!!!!
andrew @ Sep 27th 2007 2:03PM
does it break the software sim unlock? thats the question i think everyone here has.
Fatima @ Sep 27th 2007 2:04PM
SWEET! Now to buy some songs over wifi
Kevin @ Sep 27th 2007 2:04PM
Great but does it break the 3rd party programs? Brick "enhanced" systems ;) ? I'm not upgrading until I'm sure it won't
Joe @ Sep 27th 2007 2:38PM
Dude it's a firmware update. Of course it's going to remove 3rd party apps. It won't brick it if you have apptapp or installer.app installed. It'll just overwrite it to a factory state. Same goes for unlocked.
kyle @ Sep 27th 2007 2:04PM
Beautiful! Lets see if I now own a $600 brick.
Bassnote @ Sep 27th 2007 3:49PM
surely that's $400? ;-)
sgonyea @ Sep 27th 2007 2:05PM
Does it break the broken breaker on my broken iBroke?
Nando @ Sep 27th 2007 2:29PM
LOL!!

Still talking? Still not interested in your opinion.

Khris @ Sep 27th 2007 2:52PM
I'm still not interested in your opinion because I'm too busy figuring out what I'm going to do with thousands of bunk iPod Touch screens!

Marty @ Sep 27th 2007 2:06PM
Will it end world hunger and bring peace to the Middle East?
Kei @ Sep 27th 2007 2:40PM
last time I checked, Qatar, Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain are pretty peacefull. ;)
Marty @ Sep 27th 2007 4:33PM
But I'm still hungry.
squizzi @ Sep 28th 2007 11:42AM
But theirs transformers in Qatar.. it's not peaceful.
Nirmal @ Sep 27th 2007 2:07PM
does it say TV OUT?? Did I miss that feature before?
Kit Cowan @ Sep 27th 2007 2:07PM
i can't wait to be able to hear my calls... the volume was so not loud enough for new york streets.
Michael @ Sep 27th 2007 2:08PM
Awesome!
I wonder if the volume increase affects the ring tone volume. That's one of my biggest complaints. Hopefully it does.
Does anyone know if you can get podcasts via the wifi music store? I'll find all this out soon enough.
Michael @ Sep 27th 2007 2:45PM
No it doesn't appear so. Ring tone volume seems to have stayed the same.
JohnQPoster @ Sep 27th 2007 2:55PM
Upgrade and find out :-)
Michael @ Sep 27th 2007 3:07PM
No it doesn't, I already upgraded.
randy @ Sep 28th 2007 2:31AM
NO PODCASTS. NO WAY TO REMOVE ICON from home screen. WHAT THE HELL IS THIS??? Some sort of JOKE?
Michael @ Sep 27th 2007 2:08PM
Also is video out progressive scan or interlaced?
PS3guy @ Sep 27th 2007 2:09PM
Where is ichat?
Joe @ Sep 27th 2007 2:48PM
iDunno
james @ Sep 27th 2007 2:10PM
That's it!? I welcome a few of those changes, but in general all I have to say it "WTH?". There are so many other things that needed to be adjusted or enhanced.
I have a huge list for the google maps app. So much for "exchange push coming soon". Hopefully native app development will now resume and continue to enhance the iPhone.
highpitch1204 @ Sep 27th 2007 2:18PM
My sim unlock still works after the update. :)
Ambrish Tyagi @ Sep 27th 2007 6:36PM
What software did you use initially to unlock the phone? AnySim?
LEXX911 @ Sep 27th 2007 3:21PM
You people really trust highpitch1204? He could be a troll to get you people to install this and screw your unlock iphone.
Quentin @ Sep 27th 2007 2:11PM
People who used iFuntastic to jailbreak their iPhones, please keep us in touch if it breaks things. I want to keep MY ringtones and not pay a buck for them.
Dan @ Sep 27th 2007 3:36PM
It nuked the iFuntastic changes, but didn't brick.
frozenrubber @ Sep 27th 2007 2:13PM
LOUDER VOLUME....PRAISE THE LORD
Kyrra @ Sep 27th 2007 2:14PM

Good maybe now that the iPhone will (hopefully) be under the same lockdown code as the touch, us touch owners will finally see some dedication and progress in cracking it.
mcg @ Sep 27th 2007 2:14PM
What the hell, I'm trying it now. I haven't unlocked my SIM but I have AppTapp installed and a number of applications, including SummerBoard. I'll let you know how it goes.
Ben Kreeger @ Sep 27th 2007 2:16PM
Yes, please let me know what happens; I've got AppTapp installed.
Teh @ Sep 27th 2007 3:40PM
Please do! I don't want a worthless att contract ...
mcg @ Sep 27th 2007 2:19PM
Oops, it's probably best that I reply to my original post. I got the dreaded "unknown error" when attempting to install the software right off the bat. Maybe undoing jailbreak would have averted that problem, but what's done is done. Now I am having to use the iTunes Restore Phone feature. Looks like I'll be losing my apps and my data. No big deal to me, really, but beware. I'll post again when I'm up and running with 1.1.1.
