IMOBILE's Flying C1000 phone / PDA / PMP / watch
You wouldn't think you'd be able to fit a GSM phone, PDA (with stylus), and regular old "watch" functions into into a "stylish" package like the IMOBILE Flying C1000... but you'd be wrong. Dead wrong. Feast your eyes on the latest and greatest wrist-related marvel out of China -- a tiny phone with a touchscreen, Bluetooth support, 60MB of RAM, a video / audio player, a mini USB jack, and possibly a camera (though it's quite hard to tell from the photos). The watch seems to share at least guts (if not design) with SMS Technology's M500, and of course we've seen phone watches and PMP watches, but never before has it all been pulled together in such an "attractive" package. The C1000 also appears to be both 2G- and 3G-ready, thus allowing you to browse large, image-heavy webpages on the tiniest screen ever made. No word on price and availability, but you can be sure the Engadget staff is doing everything possible to get the team equipped with these.

Phone.. sure, PMP.. sure, but PDA? What can you possibly get done.. or even SEE on a screen that size?
Kyle @ Sep 18th 2007 11:41PM
You can make appointments, viewing the calendar one day at a time.
prokanda @ Sep 18th 2007 11:43PM
but how're you supposed to type out what the appointments are? LOL try seeing a keyboard on that thing.. the stylus would have to be a sewing pin and the screen would have to be like QVGA resolution...

3G support? Apparently those chipsets work reasonably well except for power, they're real power hogs.
yelohbird @ Sep 18th 2007 1:47PM
Actually, it says the radio is tri-band GSM 900/1800/1900, and that you can stick in either 2G/3G sim cards from the local carriers. Thus it doesn't seem like it actually has 3G...just that a 3G sim card will work on it (as Taiwanese 3G carriers all support 2G as well).
Bb @ Sep 18th 2007 1:58PM
Ah, thanks for the clarification. I hereby rescind my dig at the Steve Jobs defense of EDGE :)

Taiwan, not China, you insensitive clod!
joe23521 @ Sep 18th 2007 2:00PM
Umm...I really don't want to get into a political discussion on a gadget blog, but that's just like saying, Hawaii, not USA...
aron @ Sep 18th 2007 2:10PM
Actually, the article clearly mentions that it only supports Simplified Chinese and English in terms of handwriting recognition, and turns Traditional Chinese into gibberish. If that's the case, I highly doubt this was made in Taiwan as they use Traditional Chinese almost exclusively, and would at least throw support into there. Speaking of which, ruins my chances of getting one :(
yelohbird @ Sep 18th 2007 2:17PM
@joe23521
of all audiences, I would've thought a gadget blog reader would know that most of the world's semiconductor chips, motherboards, laptops, pda phones, etc. proudly carry the "Made in Taiwan" emblem, as they are manufactured on a little island free from communist rule.
But I digress. Let's not get political here, since all we really want are fast shiny new gadgets =)
yelohbird @ Sep 18th 2007 2:20PM
@aron
I stand corrected...thanks for pointing that out. I got thrown off by the "台灣大哥大" on the screen.
Too bad engadget doesn't support deleting/withdrawing comments.

I really want one, maybe a phone watch strapped to my wrist would stop me from constantly forgetting my cell phone everywhere I go. Plus the whole Dick Tracy wrist communicator thing makes my nerdy heart go pitter-pat.

If you don't think this is nerdy enough (or think it's too expensive), here's another one for RMB699 (~US$93) sans PDA touchscreen, but with a huge camera for your pleasure

I wonder if that thing doubles as a phaser from the original Star Trek TV show?
Chris Aubeck @ Sep 18th 2007 4:33PM
I expect this watch is based on the technology that went into the M500, as the M600 apparently was, but if Imobile can manage to deliver the goods when promised and not keep its customers totally in the dark for long periods as SMS has done, and keep the price down, I wish it luck and may well buy one myself.
ryan @ Sep 18th 2007 4:39PM
I like the straying from traditional cell phone and pda designs here, but personally I would have no use for a watch phone because I feel it would just be too small to get anything done by making it hard to type and text on such a small screen.
moe @ Sep 18th 2007 10:58PM
Imobile is a cellular company thats tests future technologies for the bigger companies. the imobile 920 has the upcoming sony k850i camera lens in it. they have also done products for Asus and a few other companies. I would not doubt this is in fact another companies idea in disguise.
