Cooked WinMo 6 ROM verified for PPC-6700, XV6700

Well ladies and gents, it seems the rumored Windows Mobile 6 update for the Sprint PPC-6700 / Verizon XV6700 is looking a little more legit. True to his word, ppcgeeks user Helmi_c showed us that the proof is indeed in the pudding with a goodly pile of pics of what appears to be a real handset running the updated operating system. It should be dropping tomorrow -- though no word of an exact time -- so feel free to hit the gallery we've put together while you wait.

How do you install Windows Mobile onto a phone? Does it have to be pre-installed and you just update it? For example if I wanted to put it (any version) on my MotoRAZR V3xx could I, and if so how?
I've done loads of searching and can't find a list of compatible phones or a place to download/buy it. Can someone please enlighten me as to how one goes about getting it onto a phone.
Joey Sanders @ Aug 31st 2007 10:00AM
Your phone would have to be a type of device that is actually designed to be running a windows mobile operating system for starters. Unfortunately motorola MotoRAZR's aren't pdas or smartphones, so they are not capable of running windows mobile.
Grizz @ Aug 31st 2007 9:59AM
You need to buy a smartphone or Hybrid phone. But even then its not like windows where you can format and install the latest version. It solely depends on the hardware manufacturer as to what versions your allowed to run on their product.
Derry Quinn @ Aug 31st 2007 10:09AM
Thanks Guys. Also, see the definition here http://www.google.com/search?q=what+is+windows+mobile&sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B3GGGL_enIE238IE238&aq=t
Can I run it on my ds, wii, 360, ps2, n64, what?
moe @ Aug 31st 2007 10:23AM
your moto v3 is not even a normal cell phone! its just hardware with a very big java application.
Derry Quinn @ Aug 31st 2007 10:43AM
Really? Can you give me a link? I may have to have some words with Mr Hutchison. I hate 3Ireland but I love 3Ireland. £ sucks but the others suck more!
Derry Quinn @ Aug 31st 2007 9:54AM
Also what is the diff between CE and mobile
Grizz @ Aug 31st 2007 9:57AM
Microsoft switches back and forth and cannot settle on one branding.
Derry Quinn @ Aug 31st 2007 10:10AM
lol, typical M$
typoink @ Aug 31st 2007 11:06AM
Or, for a real answer, Windows CE is the name of the basic OS / technology, but Windows Mobile is the name of a platform built from Windows CE that's designed for mobile devices. The terms aren't really interchangable, but the "Windows Mobile" name didn't exist at the start, so the early Win CE platforms were just called "Win CE."
Windows CE can also be used for other types of devices (and can be made to look and act much more like standard desktop Windows), but the Windows Mobile platform and it's subsets are the most popular.
jsanders4484 @ Aug 31st 2007 9:55AM
It's real :) The files were made available to the public at 12:00 this morning on the ppcgeeks irc channel. We were quite shocked actually, here most people were thinking it would be released later that day if at all.
By the way WM6 is extremely fast and stable on my phone [Sprint PPC-6700]. It's a very noticeable upgrade! I'm going to be sticking with it over WM5.
mewantphone @ Aug 31st 2007 2:25PM
Are you experiencing the problem I listed below? Did you backup your contacts list before upgrading?
David C @ Mar 25th 2008 10:00AM
what were the steps required to upgrade?
dave smith @ Aug 31st 2007 9:56AM
I grabbed the rom and ran it thos morning... flawless performance so far. Th ewhole process to upgrade took 10 minutes, no problem reconnecting to Verizon... awesome work.
Neeko @ Aug 31st 2007 10:00AM
ill be installing that later today. Ive got the AKU 3.5 runniNG now. all HOTNESS.
GFMEdia @ Aug 31st 2007 10:26AM
Yeah this is 100% wokring, not liking the New media player, it won't let me add mulitple songs in one shot, you have to add them 1 by 1 to a playlist, other than that all is there, oh yeah voice calling is not active anymore, don't know why, you hit the record button and it goes straight to voice notes, can't find any settings to enable voice call
DRTigerlilly @ Aug 31st 2007 10:49AM
I think you need to check if voice command is installed, and then you need you need to activate the key you want to assign it to. I would give you the specific instructions but my sister has comandeered my phone:S
Derry Quinn @ Aug 31st 2007 10:45AM
Do you mean voice dialing? What's the point in a phone if you can't voice call anyone.
Chris Moroz @ Aug 31st 2007 11:26AM
You can still access the old Windows Media Player through the programs menu.
GFMEdia @ Aug 31st 2007 10:56AM
Sorry tired, misprint, it was supposed to refer to vocie dialing, not voice call.
GFMEdia @ Aug 31st 2007 10:55AM
Voice command does not appear to be part of the install (using a aprint version of the phone, it was originally installed with it but all is wiped out and loaded with new stuff)
Kennyb123 @ Aug 31st 2007 11:32AM
What are the chances this comes out for the Moto Q Silver?
Kennyb123 @ Aug 31st 2007 11:33AM
(not the Pro version, I know the Q doesn't have touchscreen)
The Standard version.
gotee12 @ Aug 31st 2007 11:35AM
Any Alltel users try this yet?
Jakeander @ Aug 31st 2007 6:50PM
I got this working on the alltel network right now.
Rob Lee @ Sep 1st 2007 8:22AM
We have 8 6700's in our company on Alltel, We upgraded 4 of them this afternoon without any issues. And the upgrade is definitely worth it.. not just for WM6, but also for the HTC Apps on this ROM.
Woo Hoo!!!
LordJohnWhorfin @ Aug 31st 2007 12:21PM
BFD. I recently switched from an HTC Wizard (WM5) to a Tytn (Sprint Mogul, WM6) and I can't believe how small the differences are. The most noticeable one is the mail client now supports HTML. Big whoop. I wouldn't bother going through the hassle of reflashing my phone just for this.
BTW, the contact database format changed between WM5 and WM6, so be careful if you're planning on using a backup utility instead of ActiveSync (WM6 requires ActiveSync 4.5)
Oh, and Microsoft's own Voice Command still doesn't work properly with bluetooth headsets. Absolutely amazing that they can't get their own app on their own OS to work properly.
jsanders4484 @ Aug 31st 2007 1:45PM
Big deal? Umm...yeah you know it kind of is? Sprint hasn't rolled out any updates for the 6700 since AKU 2.2. In fact they don't even support the phone anymore because it's already EOL. Thank to people at ppcgeeks and xda-dev I've had a chance to actually have a half decent phone rather than a pos crippled by sprint.
Now the upgrade from WM5 to WM6 is freaking phenomenal. The boot time is faster, programs and applications load faster, sure there's a few bugs in the beginning (You know the phone's NOT even supposed to have WM6 which is kind of a big deal in itself).
If you look at the big picture, with a community that's actively modifying and supporting a phone like this, it actually rivals some of the newest phones on the market. I myself was going to switch to a mogul, but with this upgrade why bother? There's going to be roms and kitchens galore soon.
mat @ Aug 31st 2007 1:07PM
I will confirm that this rom works and its flawless. Running on a verizon XV6700
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=7671
matt @ Aug 31st 2007 1:29PM
Ditto for the Sprint Rom... I upgraded this morning and it is simply awesome... my phone has just gotten a new lease on life especially since my contract is up soon.
NicKo @ Aug 31st 2007 1:43PM
I'd love to try this on my Verizon XV6700. Does anyone know if it is possible to revert back to the original ROM that came with the phone after you do this upgrade? (In case its too buggy)
Djangelic @ Aug 31st 2007 8:52PM
I dont know if you can back up your old version of wm5 but i did install it this morning and it is working perfectly on my Verizon XV6700! I WILL NEVER GO BACK!!!! it works great! the only thing that i could see that i dont like is that when im typing txt messages, it doesnt tell me how many characters i have used up, or if im gonna use 2 txt messages... otherwise, IM EXTREMELY HAPPY WITH IT!!! :D i was gonna upgrade to the Q (yuck... :( ) but when this came out, its a great interim fix until the 6800 comes out for verizon (i would pay anything to get rid of this stupid antenae!!!!)
NicKo @ Aug 31st 2007 1:53PM
Also...I've got the Verizon XV6700. Which rom do I use?
Verizon
or Verizon with 1.02 bootloader?
Shahryar @ Aug 31st 2007 1:55PM
Every since I got my Sprint PPC-6700 back in Jan 2006, I always felt it was slow and sluggish - even after continuous hard resets. Hopefully Windows Mobile 6 makes it better because I really don't feel like dropping many a hundreds on a new phone like the mogul (I'm on an employee plan still from Sprint and can't sign a new contract either to save money).
I would love to do this upgrade now at work, but I gotta sync with my outlook one more time to get my calendar and contacts out. Does anyone care to elaborate on the instructions? esp for us Sprint users. The only thing that http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=7671 seems to say is:
Quick How to:
1. Put your device in bootloader mode (RECORD+POWER+RESET) and click APAC_WM6_R0_[Ur Operator name].EXE then click install wait till it finish.
2. Then Left Softkey+Right Softkey+Reset and then press Y (Hard Reset)
3. Done
I really need some more info.
GFMEdia @ Aug 31st 2007 1:59PM
Well, that pretty much is it...Do step one of course out of cradle, step two attached in cradle, step three out. When load is done, it begins to install
Sprint stuff (or whatever your device) on the system. Step two is pretty much an automated thing and takes 5-10 minutes max.
Shahryar @ Sep 12th 2007 10:29AM
Thanks GFMEdia. The cradle stuff is helpful and along the lines of what I Was looking for. I'll try this out over the weekend.
Any word on going back to WM5 if you don't like this or if you need to for sprint repairs or something? (Pref the orig ROM that the phone comes with)
GFMEdia @ Aug 31st 2007 2:00PM
BTW I installed this on a Srint unit
joe @ Aug 31st 2007 2:11PM
Installed on my Spring 6700 this morning and it is working like a champ! Plus, when I had a hacked up WM5 rom running I lost vibrate (which sucked) and it is now back!
Phone definitely has a new lease on life. Everything is faster and I was able to backup my contacts to the SD card and import them back in.
Phone is great now!
mewantphone @ Aug 31st 2007 2:22PM
I just upgraded my sprint PPC 6700 and found an issue with SMS. When I receive a text message, I don’t see the senders name or number, the first word in the text message used instead.
For example, If I get a text from john and he sent "what are you doing?" , my phone says the message is from "what" and the message is "are you doing?". Anyone else having this problem??
I should mention that before I updated my phone I synced my contacts to outlook 2007 and then synced back after the upgrade. Could my contact list format be messed up and not recognised by sms? Any help would be appreciated.
mewantphone @ Aug 31st 2007 4:01PM
The fix for the text message issue is:
1. Hard reset your phone.(choose "Y" to restore defaults. Don't forget to backup your contacts.)
2. When it prompts that it is going to start the customization in 3 seconds, do a soft reset.
Apparently the customization is not needed.
jarroddean @ Mar 10th 2008 9:13PM
i'm having the same problem. interestingly, i had installed the wm6 on my ppc6700 before and it worked fine. when my phone broke, i had to get a new phone and installed wm6 on the new one. then it stopped working. have you heard any news on how to fix it?
SpiderPig @ Aug 31st 2007 2:24PM
What is the deal with Americans all wanting voice dialling so much? Sure, it was a nifty little thing on my Philips Genie back in 1998, but these days you just look like a muppet saying "call Jeff" or whatever. I bet you think bluetooth headsets are the bees knees as well.
Shahryar @ Aug 31st 2007 3:24PM
Hey,
shortly after my earlier post in these discussions, Sean over at EngadgetMobile took the time to shoot me an email with some suggestions to make WM5 work faster on the PPC-6700 (he tried this method out on his Cingular 8125). I'm going to give it a shot when I get home and try it out for a few days before deciding to make the jump to Windows Mobile 6 on my PPC-6700.
Basically, according to him, a quick fix for sluggishness is to soft reset before the OS is customized after booting the unit for the first time. I asked for a bit more clarification, asking if he meant to:
"... after a hard reset, get the phone back to original state, and then right after the phone starts up (like, when I go through the tapping of the stylus on screen to synchronize my pen), do a soft reset and THEN really start using my PDA?"
And he replied, "Exactly! Carrier customization comes exactly as you described. You will typically see a message like 'Preparing to customize your phone' when you see that, hit reset.
If you don't see a diff or like it that way, you can always hard reset again."
So, there's something to try which I didn't know of before, and I assume some others may have not known this trick either.
One last thing, Sean also suggested making the jump to WM6 as it is better, but he suggested to make note of your handset's particulars and download the original ROM from xda-devs if you can find it (for details you just need the rom version info. It may well be that the updates from your provider are integrated right in the ROM, though that usually isn't the case)
Hope this helps out others. Thanks Sean!
Wise @ Aug 31st 2007 4:56PM
Any idea if it will work for the Treo 700wx?
jsanders4484 @ Aug 31st 2007 9:13PM
The Treo 700wx is a completely different phone. You'll just brick it if you try to flash it with a ppc-6700 rom.
Folks this upgrade is ONLY for Apache users. Just cross your fingers, perhaps your phone might get blessed with an upgrade in the future :)
DarkAardvark @ Aug 31st 2007 6:04PM
hmm.... i wonder if it supports SDHC. i want one of them 16 gig SDs for my 700wx =D
any ideas if it supports SDHC??
GGuruUsa @ Sep 1st 2007 1:40AM
that's a hardware thing, not fixable via software.
DarkAardvark @ Sep 1st 2007 12:12PM
it definitely is fixable via software. all it needs is a driver update and it'll support it. for example, the treo 700p hack. the 700wx has the same hardware as the 700p, so it'll definitely support it.
i'd like wm6 on mah phone!
Eden @ Aug 31st 2007 8:48PM
I am currently running the WM6 on my PPC-6700 all is well, other than when selecting songs in Windows media player it doesn't always play the correct song.
It looks AMAZING.
NicKo @ Sep 1st 2007 12:27AM
Awesome! I installed it on my VX6700 today and used it all day. This OS is totally stable, fast, and a pleasure to use. Viva WM6! Here's the only bug I found....tell me if you found it too:
In the Live Search box on the home page.... You can't input any letters using the top row of keys on the keyboard...it only does numbers (as if you have the function key pressed). Anyone experience this too?
