AT&T now offering Motorola RAZR 2 V9

What a refreshing change of pace! AT&T actually beat its estimate of "early September" for its variant of the Motorola RAZR 2, the V9 -- albeit in a rather bizarre shade, "mahogany" (where we come from, that's called purple, but whatevs). Though it's not showing up on AT&T's online store just yet, it's showing up for their business "premier" customers (note the screen shot above) and seems to be filtering into brick-and-mortar locations as we write this. The premier site shows a rather shocking off-contract price of $749.99, though with a combination of discounts, rebates, and contracts, it should fall into a far more reasonable price range for pretty much everyone involved. Seriously, $750? Sheesh.

$750?! Aren't most PDA/Phones much cheaper than that with no contract?

Unless it cures cancer like the iPhone I really don't see a justification in that. Though it does make it look like you're getting a very good deal at only $300. I wonder how they come to the prices they do.

The $750 price tag is there so you won't feel stupid for paying the $299 when they start giving them out for free with 2 year commitments in a couple of months. You can say "At least I didn't pay 749 like some dummies."

The phone will not cost anywhere near $750 outright(no contract). The non contract price will be $499 and with a contract it will run $299.

AT&T screwed up. the Retail price is supose to be $479.99 thats what moto put it at. and if AT&T dosn't want to sell it for that then thats there problem because thats what motorola is going to sell it at.

I love the prices of some of these phones. I could sign a 2 year contract and get a Mogul for $399 ($150 discount for signing a 2yr) or I could go on ebay/craigslist/whatever and get a brand new one for $375. No tax.

This is common Cingular/AT&T manipulation of non-contract price on the Premier site. On the regular site you will find the non-contract price is lower, but the discounts aren't as heavy and the final price will be *drum roll* $299.99. They simply jack the retail prices on the corporate site and provide heavy discounts so the suits think their corporate contract is a good deal.

The Premier site does get some amazing refurb deals though.

They really should have put a slighter bigger (get rid of all that side margin ..it's obviously not needed for structural issues because the Apple didnt waste space on the sides of the iPhone). Also, they should have put a much higher resolution screen than crappy QVGA.

I checked out that deal on Amazon, and there's a bit of a catch. You can get the phone at $199, but you also wind up with a second number. Basically, even though it asks for your current number, you can't transfer that to the RAZR2 without incurring a penalty, which then causes Amazon to charge you another $250. I had this confirmed by a rep from Amazon, as well as AT&T. This deal is essentially for brand new AT&T customers, or for those who don't mind giving up their phone number.

I also checked out the deal on Wirefly. You can get the RAZR2 V9 w/your number, but the only plan you can select is the one w/950 minutes or more. The phone winds up costing you $249 ($299 - $50 rebate).

I personally think that RAZRs were just a phone fad that's been and gone by now. I've hardly even seen that many V3x and V3is, let alone the RAZR2.

Companies always play these games with phones sold sans contracts. The reason the iPhone price caused such uproar was that WITH a contract it was still 600... this thing will come down to mid 200s-300 with a contract, and I bet that $749 sans contract price will drop a fair bit very quickly as well.

the original razr was JUNK. I got rid of mine asap, as did all my friends. Software was slow, horribly laid out, and the design of the phone was cheap and gimmicky. Stay away from motorola phones.

I just got my V9 Friday. The rep sold it to me for $179.00 with two rebates that totaled $80. She even sold it to me a day early, so I bought two. The next day she calls me to tell me that she made a mistake, if I want to keep the phones I will have to shell out an additional $130 per phone. Plus, the insurance she sold me wasn't actually available for the V9. I haven't decided exactly how to handle the situation. I really like the phone, but not for the vastly inflated price, and not without insurance. I did find the phone listed for $199 with service on mobiledia.com. Tomorrow I'm supposed to go talk to the store manager where I bought the phones. Wish me luck!
