Windows Mobile 6 promised for Apache owners on Friday
Although frankly the benefits they'll see are marginal -- especially if they've already upgraded their handsets to AKU 3 -- many Sprint PPC-6700 / Verizon XV6700 devotees will nevertheless be delighted to learn that xda-developers forum member helmi_c is promising an Apache-compatible build of Windows Mobile 6 to be released this Friday, and he's got the screenshots that claim to prove it. As tipster Joey put it, "many of us [6700] owners have been kinda left out in the cold with no WM6 love for the 6700," but where manufacturers and carriers fail to act, you can usually count on the tireless community over at xda-developers to provide a solution -- and from the looks of things, helmi_c's build even trumps the standard upgrade by cooking the HTC Touch interface right in. Good stuff if it does indeed pan out, so we'll keep you posted.
Update: Helmi_c wrote in to let us know that he is actually based out of the ppcgeeks community, and the links in this post were quickly adjusted accordingly. Because seriously, would you want to step in between factions of highly motivated geeks and developers? No thanks.
[Thanks, Joey S.]

I love xda-developers. Don't forget to leave him a little something in his tip jar.
Neeko @ Aug 28th 2007 2:32PM
YES YES YES. FINALLY. Ive been using AKU 3.5 for a while now and its pretty stable it has a lot of features. but a dedicated WM^ is always a good thing.
matt @ Aug 28th 2007 3:18PM
I'm running 3.5 as well and while there are a few minor bugs it's a great improvement to what sprint/verizon are offering "officially"
I can't wait to do this WM6 upgrade, I'll be leaving a donation too just cuz I know how hard porting this was since I've been following the forums.

I'm just glad my ppc-700 finally gets some wm6 love. I've been using aku 3.3 official by Phoenx06 over at ppcgeeks.com (The one based off of bell mobility).
I wonder if the htc today plugin is already in the rom or if it can be optional...
MasterCKO @ Aug 28th 2007 2:42PM
xda-developers = AWESOME.

Right on brother.
Right on.
Zed @ Aug 28th 2007 3:17PM
Wow, I'm looking forward to this. Sprint's support for the 6700 is non-existant. The poor quality OS and marginal hardware have really made the phone a frustrating experience. And I like windows Mobile.
The AKUs were a small improvement, but I'd rather go with less features and more reliability now. Hope WM6 just works.

No love for the 700wx over at XDA-Developers. wtf is that all about?
angel12 @ Aug 28th 2007 5:07PM
seeing as how HTC didnt build the 700wx, i wouldnt expect xda-developers to do much, now htc did build the 750.
ItsTheOMGShow @ Aug 28th 2007 5:43PM
@angel12
You're wrong. HTC manufactures the 700wx. In fact, HTC has manufactured all Treos except the 680.

Damn I have been waiting for this! I've hacked all I could to make my 6700 better then other PDA's in it's class and now this will make it more worth while.
Neeko @ Aug 28th 2007 5:01PM
MY 6700 is hacked to do everthing. no PDA around has so many features. I could care less about visual voicemail and coverflow.
Bryan Hughes @ Aug 28th 2007 5:02PM
What skin is that that makes it look so cool, the ice black look?
angel12 @ Aug 28th 2007 5:08PM
the htc today screen theme.
jsanders4484 @ Aug 28th 2007 5:14PM
It's the default HTC theme with the HTC Today plugin :) (Both of which are available for download if you just google it.)
Daniel Castellani @ Aug 28th 2007 5:42PM
I'll be leaving a donation too if this works. I've been waiting for it to install in my XV6700. Can't wait!!
Joe Pak @ Aug 29th 2007 5:48PM
I think that its the HTC Kaiser interface (5 buttons) not the touch interface.
