First Engadget iPhone returned

Hot on the heels of the Engadget iPhone headcount (12, if you didn't know), the very first Engadget iReturn has taken place. After ten and a half hours of waiting in line -- but less than 24 hours of actual ownership -- iPhone number one has been taken back to the store, citing "janky keyboard" and "no money for rent" as reasons behind the return. Note the look of utter shock, confusion, and hurt on the face of the Apple employee as she notified us of their 10% restocking fee (after the break).

Everyday people can be empathetic. If you've never gone through it and feel bad for the person, you're sympathetic. If you have gone through it, and can actually feel the pain they are dealing with, you're empathetic.

Selling it on ebay would have cost the 10% restocking fee anyway (if not more). If you notice, people are getting the 8gb model on ebay for UNDER $600, sans tax. Factor in the cost of posting it on ebay, the cut they take, and the cut paypal takes and it's just easier to get the same amount of money back right away at the store (and no hassle with the phone plan you just activated being canceled or somehow being charged for someone else's new plan).

Actually, I hadn't noticed that. So I went to Ebay and looked it up. In the last few minutes, here are what the iPhone sold for:

Depending on how much tax one paid (or if they paid any tax), these still seem not only reasonably profitable and far better than the $540 one would get back after the restocking fee.

on launch day someone on ebay pay $100,000.00 for a single iphone.
i feel bad for the guy cuz all he had to do was go to apple.com,and order one. the shipping time is about 2 weeks, but its better than paying 100+ times the retail price

I think all carriers are required by law to allow you to terminate you contract within 15 to 30 days after activation without having to pay an early termination fee. The restocking fee, of course, is up to the company to decide.

In London only merchants who love to rip-off people down in Tottenham Court Road charges 'restocking fees'. No other reputable companies would do that, not even Harrods or crappy stores like Dixons/Currys. Maybe Apple down at Regents Street, but I never bothered to shop there.

Actually, most Apple stores waive the restock fee for items in the firs 14 days. In the case of the iPhone they seem to be enforcing it and I can think of one REALLY good reason for this:

Ebay

Every major gadget launch in the last couple of years has been plagued by speculators buying as many units as possible to make a quick buck. From Apple's point of view why should they give someone a risk-free approach to make money re-selling their products?

And I've gotta say, I don't understand why someone would be returning an iPhone for reasons of cash (or lack thereof). The price has been available for months, the monthly tariffs were known in advance, if you don't think you can afford the latest shiny gadget then DON"T BUY IT!

I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the 10% restocking fee only applies to Computers/Monitors and iPods (and by now iPhones)... perhaps "Major Electronics". I bought a power adapter recently and was able to return it with no probs and no restocking fee.

Yeah, this just sounds idiotic. There are so many iPhones at retailers there was never a risk of running out. A friend walked into an Apple store this morning and got one. No line, no waiting. And yet people were waiting in lines outside of stores all week long since Monday. Pathetic. As for him not being able to afford it that just means Engadget must not pay their employees very well.

I bought a graphics card from the Apple store, had it installed and everything, and they told me there was a 10% restocking fee even before I bought it.

Then I returned it, and they didn't charge the restocking fee, in fact they even refunded the installation cost!

Although, I don't blame them for the restocking fee. They sell you new product, you give them back used product.

A little anecdote: A few years ago, I was a virgin, you see. I was nice and respectful, and I was the type to, like our friend Core 2 Duo, perhaps say someone should get off the computer if they think a small image of a lady on Engadget is hot.

Then I found a nice girlfriend, and we... did that thing that boys and girls do. And we did it a lot. And now I tend to think like Prasand does. The moral of the story is this: making comments like that doesn't make you a loser who spends too much time on the computer. In fact, it might mean just the opposite.
