Sprint PPC-6800 (HTC Titan) in the wild
Canada's Telus may be in the process of beating it to the punch, but that's not stopping Sprint (and Verizon, for that matter) from prepping its own variant of the HTC Titan, the PPC-6800. A PPCGeeks forum member recently got the enviable opportunity to screw around with a prototype of the Sprint-branded unit -- and besides coming away with a veritable cornucopia of imagery, they've posted a few key details: in addition to rocking Windows Mobile 5 AKU 3.3 (Pocket PC Phone Edition, of course), the device will use a Qualcomm MSM7500 to push bits and bytes at around 400MHz (as we've already seen in its XV6800 sibling) and end up with about 174MB of usable Flash and 49MB of RAM. Of course, this is a prototype -- specs are subject to change -- but seeing how the Telus version is already on the streets, what you see here is probably darned near what you're going to get. Follow the break for some key shots.

Hmmm and the keyboard slides out from the side or the bottom?
Andy @ Apr 19th 2007 1:26PM
@Rick_Havoc
It slides from the side.
WM5??? Ugh, I'll wait for it to get updated to WM6 before I consider replacing my Treo...

If you're looking into purchasing a Mogul (PPC-6800) or already have one, this site might be useful.

Agreed, Andy, WM6 is just such an improvement I can't imagine buying another WM5 device. C'mon Sprint!
apeguero @ Apr 19th 2007 1:54PM
...or you all can always swing by xda-developers.com and wait until one of their chefs cooks up a WM6 ROM for it, like they have for other HTC phones - mainly the Hermes (Cingular 8525)...that is if they haven't already!
flamer\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s grill @ Apr 19th 2007 7:28PM
xda developers? Come now. We all know that xda developers caters to GSM devices. This is a CDMA device: your one-stop shop for all kinds of custom roms, including AKU 2.5 WM5 roms like the one I am running right now, is:
PPCGEEKS.COM
Your HTC Apache supersite.
Oh, and I guess soon your HTC Titan supersite. Maybe.
Jesse S @ Apr 19th 2007 2:06PM
i760 is still better...Besides EVDO rev. a...
And this isn't the CDMA Titan! It's different!
Jesse S @ Apr 19th 2007 2:06PM
Confused myself...It is the Titan...I think...
Andy @ Apr 19th 2007 2:28PM
@Jesse S
Uh, what?
This is the Titan (HTC 6800), and it only comes in CDMA. I think you're thinking of the GSM Tytn (Cingular 8525, also note the spelling of the name)...I think...

someone give this guy a new camera to test... please.
SumYungGai @ Apr 19th 2007 2:26PM
Wow - its got the amazing Windows Mobile 5.0 which is only 2+ years old, and WM6 is already out but hey.. plus its got that big bulky body of the ever-boring HP Ipaq and Dell Axim type devices. PLUS its made by HTC, a company which I've owned three different phones of and all of them were crap (SP5m, Starflip, and the audiovox candy bar one rebranded from them) which had horrible reception (versus say a nokia in the same room on the same cel provider) and after a while would need a firmware reflash because the software kept getting flakier with time (i.e. would not ring when calls came in).
So this thing sounds like a winner!
Jesse S @ Apr 19th 2007 2:31PM
I know, that's what confused me...It's a very different phone, when compared to the Tytn...
Dave @ Apr 19th 2007 2:48PM
If only I didn't want the Kaiser so badly ... *sigh*
umeadi @ Apr 19th 2007 7:44PM
...and it's grey. Hasn't anyone in the R\D department noticed that black is the new silver, when it comes to cell phones? This thing looks way too similar to it's predecessor, the PPC 6700....I'm really growing bored with Sprint's bland lineup.
hoeun kim @ Apr 20th 2007 2:38AM
so it still has the proprietary audio port... you need a special usb to 3.5 inch plug adapters.. standard usb converter wont work. just give us the standard jack built in!
Yves @ Apr 20th 2007 2:29PM
HTC is already providing updates to phones with wm5 to wm6 to Europe phones and soon to U.S. So hopefully we should see the PPC-6800 with WM6 or will be able to update to WM6.

I'm curious why there's an SD card in the photo. Is that for scale? I ask because the specs I read show that the 6800 uses microSD. I'd love for it to have a real SD slot, but as far as I'm aware it doesn't. Am I wrong and does it have a real SD slot, or is that in the photo for some other reason?
Shak @ Apr 20th 2007 7:52PM
I thought all new PPC phones were coming out with WM6. Hopefully the final revision will have that, otherwise the phone is really just a face lift with different components, but the same 'phone.'
I can only dream of the day these phones have VGA resolution for crystal clear text.
Chainsaw @ Apr 24th 2007 3:01PM
With Windows Mobile 6 already launched, wouldn't they want to announce a phone with the new operating system? It does not make sense to me.
Ekauq @ Apr 19th 2007 4:43PM
like these? (if they don't change the specs that is)

I'm not going to waiste my money on this one if it doesn't support Sprint picture mail like the PPC-6600 or my current Treo 700p. Storing hundreds of pictures on your SD card is close to impossible. True picture mail allows you to store, manage and send hundreds of pictures, on the sprint network server, all from your handset! You've got to love it. I'll keep my Treo if you don't mind!
chocolateman85006 @ Apr 24th 2007 10:07PM
As far as I know, Sprint {as well as Alltel} doesn't allow MMS on their PDA/smartphones. That's why I have Verizon.
lysa @ May 2nd 2007 10:48PM
when is this phone avaliable to sprint customers?
bduerr1 @ May 17th 2007 12:35PM
I talked to a Sprint rep on Monday and he stated that on Friday the PPC 6800 along with the released Treo 755P was on some list of upcoming handsets and that on Monday it was gone but the 755 came out as expected. Apparently they get some renewed list every Friday. I also asked if the 755 was going to come out in a windows version but he stated that a WX version was not listed.
I gave up and kept my Cingular account, also gave up my 8125 and got an 8525(GSM TyTN Hermes) instead.
It came Tuesday with very old software and a radio package that really sucked! The stereo headset is a modified USB not a 2.5 and the mic is absolutely in the wrong place . . . So much for my expensive Shure headset . . .
Anyway, the HTC/Cingular upgrade works great and the phone's use experience is a tremendous improvement from the 8125. Thumbwheel with OK and Menu buttons are a very big help. There appears to be some adapter cables for the mic and there are several rumors about a factory upgrade to Mobile 6 upgrade. There is already one expected on the Europe HTC site and now on XDA-developers.com.
So for additional upgrades besides the phone:
No case
Need 2.5 or 3.5 headset adapter for Mp3 or wired voice ($15 ish)
New micro SD (only goes to 2 mg) ($35 ish)
No built in GPS unlike Sprint
No cradle like in Sprint and Canada pic’s ($50 ish)

With the iPhone coming out, I wish HTC/Sprint would use the extra time they are taking to incorporate more iPod-like storage space and capabilities, along with the WM6.0 & EV-DO Rev. A. Such a phone would be an iPhone killer! I sure hope they are putting some thought into this.

Just for the news. The PPC-6800 is not only now available for Sprint users, but for Qwest Wireless as well. Verizon soon to post some news (hopefully). Out of a Qwest users manual though, it's MHz rating is actually lower than that of the 6700's, but with a different processor I'm sure. Also, Qwest ships the 6800 with the new WM6. Let's hope at least the support is better for the 6800 than the 6700.
JD @ Sep 14th 2007 11:46PM
I've had mine for 2 weeks through Alltel. The 6800.
It's a neat phone, but the dam thing doesn't ring all the time.
People call me and leave messages, but it never said i had a call or voicemail!
I always have full bars at my house, so i know its not a service issue.
HELP!
I'll post again if i find the solution.
CGARNES @ Dec 26th 2007 10:24AM
I'm currently an AT&T customer, and I have been for over seven years, but I'm looking to switch out to AllTel (mostly because of their My Circle package). Their plans look great, and I don't think I would ever go over on minutes with My Circle, but I can't find a phone that's as awesome as my Cingular 8125. What are the differences between AllTel's HTC PPC 6800 and the HTC 8125? I live in a rural area, and I do get incredible coverage with AllTel here at home - AT&T can't even get a signal here!
