Malaysian startup Gupp Technologies is prepping its baby (and by baby we mean ugly baby, that only mommy could love) -- the Phreedom -- for Q2 release this year. This dual-mode VoIP / GSM
abomination little fella will be running a la Mobile's Convergent
Linux platform, so fiddlers, start your engines because Linux anything means open source! It's good news for Gupp that this handset is also partially redeemed with a solid feature set, packing 802.11b/g, push and pull mail, 312MHz CPU, 320MB memory, VoIP with seamless handover to GSM, and a 2200 mAh battery to supply the juice for it all. Billed as a
VoIP device first and a GSM handset second, this may be an interesting notion, but until we get our greasy hands on it, the jury is out -- and so far the looks are hurting its case.

looks crappy - sounds great. I just hope we get some nice, affordable, VoIP options over here soon ($24.99/mo is too much for a college student already paying $60+/mo for cell service). the linux geek in me will buy it no matter what if the price is $300 or less just for tinkering.

Actually, it is so butt ugly that it almost looks cool. Kind of like a H1. It's total lack of style is almost stylish. I would actually consider buying one.

Yea I agree, it's so ugly it actually sets it apart from the usual PDA look.

some of you are missing the point! yeah the product is not the sexy but have you seen the specs?? this will save me a shit load of money on my calls!! would you rather have a sexy product with a poor voip capability or a product that looks like this that can save you a lot of money...i know what I would choose! i want one. the carriers are not going to be too happy!

A product that looks like this that can save me a lot of money.

This thingy may be fugly, but if the price is decent (less than $350) I could be persuaded to get one. I kind of like the VOIP/GSM handoff.
Two wishes/hopes:
This thing had better be bluetooth capable
It needs to work at least as well as a PocketPC to sync PIM data (It would be awesome if you could sync PIM data over GSM, but good over wifi (you can't do that with a pocketPC)).

finally someone has figured out what all voip lovers need. having real voip mobility will be awesome. don't worry to much about what all these people tell you about the design. if they had any experience they would know that the tough code to crack is the performance. maybe you can make improvements to the design. i anxiously look forward buying one. i hope i can buy it through either my voip or cable provider.

Hi Sean, this is Sanjay Varma, CEO and co-founder of GUPP Technologies. I read your comments with interest and appreciate your views. In developing the Phreedom our initial focus was to put together a solution that could truly give superior wifi/voip experiences with a gsm backup to the customer. This is the hardest job and we are confident that the user can realise tremendous savings in their international and roaming calls. Now that we have overcome this technical challenge - our next challenge is to create a design that will appeal to those who want to embrace mobile voip. In this endeavor, your comments will be taken into consideration. I also invite ideas/comments from you and from anyone else that reads your blog posting. I can be reached directly at sanjay.varma@gupp.com. You can also visit www.gupp.com where comments can be submitted.
Cheers, Sanjay
