Nokia N97 debunked; fanboys in mourning

Sorry folks, it was too good to be true. With a spec sheet that read like something straight out of our wildest dreams -- 20GB hard drive, 3.2 megapixel cam, 3-inch high res display, FM radio, and an alleged 24+ hours of continuous music playback -- we wanted to believe that the Nokia N97 was real. Alas, it turns out that a member of Nokia's developer forums dreamed up the superphone; the rest, as they say, is history. Hey, at least we still have the N95 to look forward to, right?

the N97 rumor i heard was a 5 megapixel camera with 20x zoom. which kinda screams FAKE! the hard drive idea is definetly possible, the battery and camera are not. especially with a hard drive sucking up battery juice, obvious fake before it was officially debunked.

I don't think this phone is so out of the realms of possibility. You can get at 1 inch hard disks with 12 GB these days (maybe more). The other specs like the camera are doable, the battery life is a bit iffy though.

If (When?) Nokia brings out such a device - I can't see the point to any form of iPod any more. The big annual Nokia shindig is on next week (http://www.nokia.com/nokiaworld) when they usually announce a couple of new products - maybe we'll see something along these lines then.

hence the logic of an iphone, to keep the ipod brand competitive in the age of superphones (ok Ben?).

There is an argument for single-purpose devices that work like a dream, but even gadget freaks need less clutter. The prize goes to the first who can develop a PMP with phone, GPS, email, IM and games, all the size of a matchbox (with a 12" flexible screen) and endless battery life.
