Sony unveils black P!nk-branded MS-A512A M2 memory card

Topping off a month full of pink gadgetry – with most items proudly supporting breast cancer research -- is Sony's own P!nk Memory Stick Micro. Contrary to popular assumption, this 512MB M2 card is actually black, but similar to its P!nk-branded PSP, is stuffed in pink colored packaging fit for a pop star, and also touts compatibility with the K790i / K800i, M600i, K610i, Z530i, Z550i and W300i Sony Ericsson mobiles. It comes bundled with a MS PRO adapter for use in one of your many flash card readers, and also sports a pre-loaded MPEG4 video interview of the artist as well as a DRM-free (albeit shortened) MP3 of "Stupid Girls." Should you just so happen to be a rabid P!nk fan, or just need a clever excuse to purchase an M2 card, the "special edition" MS-A512A should hit stores in November for an undisclosed price.

sony wants to keep memory stick products simply so it can get the 90% of the market that doesn't think that hard; next time they go to buy something, they'd be more likely to go to a sony product if they had memory sticks; it's called proprietary media, and it's bad for the market, and sony loves it.

besides; why not ship with something other than pink?
i'm seventeen, and even I could see better things to preload.
how about the best of myspace?

then again; i'd like to see this in the bargain bin in about 2 months time, as it has no picture of that "artist" on anything other than the cover.

I was in on the meeting where they decided to do this. We just kept looking back and forth at each other trying to come up with an artist that no one cared about. We had Britney Spears on the table, Justin Timberlake, Prince... all of them had some sort of following still, so we opted to go with Pink... nobody likes Pink and it guarantees that hardly anyone will buy this, which will help this format die off sooner...

Just don't tell the upper management, if they get wind of this they'll throw someone like Paris Hilton at the product, which won't help sales, but we'd lose our jobs, and then where could Pink turn to for a quick buck?

Gosh, this has got to be the end of Sony as we know it. What the heck are they thinking?!?! That photo sucks, the memory stick duo sucks, and there is no reason to buy Sony, when Sandisk makes them better and for much less.

This plan might help gain some respect:
1. stop pushing stupid formats like MS, Duo, now BluRay
2. stop being cocky about PS3
3. start making fun games for PSP
4. create a DAP that would change the market (you've done it once before with Walkman, now do it again), not like the Bean or Atrac crap
5. stop making 100 version of each product line like laptops, or desktops

Sony needs to become a boutique manufacturer again, making very few products and making them the best. Also, while they are at it, SonyEricsson should make less phones that look the same. It's so confusing to see which one is better than the other.

Okay, I like Sony just as much as the next guy (We have BOTH been referred to as fanboys... haha), but why the hell do they keep making different memory cards? (Maybe that's a bit too rhetorical...)

Plus, I'm with Jimmy on this. It's totally lame to make a "Support Breast Cancer!" product WITHOUT CHANGING THE PRODUCT.

Yeah. What they'all said. Pink is definitely not our idea of an ideal woman artist- her lyrics are oft-times pointed, political and personally demanding. She doesn't fit the mold of the dumb slut pop/r&b clonegirl- ie: beyonce, brittany, fergie, et. al.

I think Sony is targeting the wrong demographic. How many girls/women uses Memory Stick M2 compatible products? As far as I know, M2 is only used in Sony Ericsson cellphones, which doesn't have models catered to females. In addition, the cellphones that are M2 compatible are expensive, so there is not much people interested in this format.

I guarantee that this will be an instant flop. BTW, does this come with a built-in rootkit?

a few realities:
1) sony is a 'content' company.
2) sony has whatever talent they have in their electronics biz take a back seat to their entertainment business. This started sometime after their purchase of CBS all those years ago.
3) i'm sure it's very very very cheap for them to do this, just to test the market
4) most people commenting here are not in their demographic for this product. But the people that comment here do not make up 98% of the unwashed masses

Are you kidding me? In some cases, you can be right by saying this, but not with the Memory Stick storage medium. Memory Stick is good for the market because it is smaller than comparable memory card standards (namely, Secure Digital, when compared with Memory Stick Duo), and it offers marginally higher transfer speeds. Pretty much the only memory card standard that can rival the Memory Stick in terms of practicality is CompactFlash, since it is durable and offers higher storage capacities at slightly lower prices.

Competition is good. That's true. And we all know shortcomings of SD and CF. But the point here that I avoid memory stick (tm) precisely that it is used exclusively by Sony AND there are hell lot of them.

CompartFlash - there are Type I, Type II and MicroDrive (Type II with higher power reqs).

Secure Digital - there are SD, Mini SD, Micro SD and SDHC (SD High Capacity).

And now, can you name *ALL* Memory Stick (tm) products Sony manufactures? How many users can tell one from another? How can one buy them, since even shop personel has trouble telling which Sony device uses which one...

lol, actually CompactFlash Type II IS the MicroDrive.

But anyways, yes, I can name all the Memory Stick variants, they are:

Memory Stick - the original
Memory Stick PRO - Memory Stick with higher transfer speeds
Memory Stick Duo - smaller Memory Stick to rival Secure Digital (I believe it is also smaller than the SD in all dimensions, I'm certain about the width and height)
Memory Stick PRO Duo - Memory Stick Duo with higher transfer speeds
Memory Stick Micro (M2) - small Memory Stick to combat microSD, transfer speed is the same as Memory Sticks with the PRO designation
