Remember The Boy Genius, the dude who
scored those CDMA Q shots way back in the
year 2005? He's back, and hooked us up with some shots of
Motorola's
Canary, what we understand to be the true successor to the
RAZR. Contrary to prior reports that this thing would run Windows
Mobile, you can plainly see that it doesn't; we understand it uses the same software build as the RAZR
V3x, which might imply it's a UMTS device as well. A second
trustworthy source let us know that the device would pack a 2 megapixel camera, and would be positioned as Moto's new
flagship phone due for Q4 2006 or Q1 2007 launch, which jibes with everything else we've been hearing, and starts to
pull this picture together. More pics after the break!
P.S. It's worth noting, as we're told, that this
phone is more or less just as thin as the original RAZR, just not as wide. And that's supposedly not a plastic
exterior, but a soft-touch finish and aluminum detailing.
Quite honestly looks like an old RAZR prototype rather than a successor to the current one.

wow...a razr with a 2 MP camera. i cant wait. seriously...the addition of UMTS is nice, but why did they decide to change the width of the phone. looks too tall and thin now.
by the time this comes it will be nearly 2.5 years since the original razr release. cant they come up with something new and exiting?
i will be interested once the get rid of their horrible OS.
I guess polished=successor. looks waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy thinner too.
Doesn't the fact that it is so fat defeat the point of calling it the Razr(slim)?
I hope they finally recessed those buttons on the side and added some grouping capabilities for their phone directory. While I like the style of the Moto phones, their UI and data organization leave a lot to be desired.
I'm glad I ordered my n412i.
This just looks like one of those Sony Walkman mp3 players.
Looks plastic-y too, way plastic-y. I'd be willing to bet this is more like the V3b--something to replace the Vxxx series phones, not the razr. And the change in shape? That screams that they're targeting women with it...
that is a very ugly phone. im dissapointed with the new look
Is this the same one as the W220?
can you say fingerprints galore? because i can
fingerprints galore.
Get rid of those stupid tags on the picture.
Im not too keen on the design. It seems to Long, and narrow, which is the opposite of the previous RAZR which IMO was wide and short.
Yeah, Motorola's software stack is junk (on all of their phones) and the (any?) LCD display is virtually useless outside during the day. Good thing the form factor is getting smaller: it's a decent pocket-stuffer, but a pretty lame phone. Cell phones don't do anything well.
i wish they would have used the microsoft software. i have the moto v3 and think it is the best phone made.
i could care less if this new model has a better camera...
this phone looks a tad fatter but attractive nonetheless..
Oh, now it's fourth-quarter 2006? Remember that the V3x, which STILL isn't out in the U.S. (hell, the even-older V3i STILL isn't out) was due fourth quarter 2005.
And the same shitty OS. Unbelievable.
Motorola = finished
I agree with many of the comments made; does look very cheap. Personally, I do like the thinning on the sides; as a text messaging addict, one of the main problems I found with the Razr was the width was not condusive for very fast texting. I won't even bother with the color, seemingly plastic veneer...yes. You are all right. Its a metro-phone.
I have a RAZR and it is easily the worste phone I have ever used. I swore off motorhella along time ago and shouldn't have cracked.
Looks like they got rid of that horrible keypad the current Razr has (Thank God!). I agree on it being too tall and skinny. Women will definitely go for it though. Now, all Moto needs to do is bring that over to the Sprint world. I like my A900 but more choices would be good.
Wahhhh this phone looks so cool. got any information on how large is the storage? This one sure will cost cheaper and i still think this cool marketing mobile phone from Motorola
Those watermarks are so obtrusive.
Hey, the OS isn't as bad as what Verizon tries to cram onto every phone of theirs. I thank God every day that my E815 has Motorola's OS instead of Verizon's.
Jake,
Any chance you can tell me how I can get Motorola's OS on my E815 under Verizon control?
Thanks,
Wayne
The phone looks alright I think.
ITS UGLY!!
and plastic!
still the dumb moto OS? no thanks, so glad i went with the SMT 5600 over that phone, i hate using my gf's pink RAZR...
Razr V3=Startac
this new phone=V8160
I think this phone will be a big hit just like V8160 and v3682 did.
Whether or not you believe me is irrelevant. I work for the Mot and the Canary, while very pretty, is a fingerprint machine!!
You should see how many RAZR incarnates are being developed....its pretty sad....talk about beating a dead horse. But I suppose why change the formula when even the original RAZRs cannot be made fast enough. They are still selling crazystyle.
I saw a sweet ass slider (not the one already shown on engadget) that is RAZR-ish and has that Soft-touch paint...oh man is that phone awesome. Look out for that one. The keypad had Asian character text on it as well so I'm betting this one isn't a North America phone...though it fucking should be.
I know you guys like Motos but hate the OS. Trust me, so do the engineers. But I've got 2 words for you: Legacy Software. To abandon all that old code that they've got in the OS overnight would cripple Motorola's SW teams and their ability to crank out decent SW releases. I don't know if any company could make such a ginormous change overnight, but Moto sure as hell can't. Fret not fellow gadgetwhores, the new Java/Linux OS is coming....and it looks sweet. But we all will have to wait for late 2007, early 2008 to see them start trickling out.
For what it's worth...
I think one of the commentors is correct, all Moto has is the Razr period. It badly needs to have the keys raised and more detent to them. It's a great phone for a woman.
Moto can't get phones out on time, their operating system sucks, and they haven't put out a decent phone since the Mpx220.
I myself want a converged device, WM5, Bluetooth, Wifi, Broadband, GPS, AND in a clamshell design, and with a usable outside LCD.
Linux, what for? so I can sync with my uh refridgerator, yup that would be so cool NOT.....
And Keyboard? What for?? WM5 has a keyboard built-in AND T9....
And how about a camera..ok if you have to, but the camera on the Mpx220 and on the V710 were like a joke.
Moto needs to stop making things that their ad agency can sell to us, AND start making things we can use at a price we can afford.
I love my Samsung I730 BUT it's NOT a pocket phone. I also love my Plantronics Voyager 510 WITH noise cancelling AND Windsmart technology. Put those in a junk Moto HS805 Bluetooth headset and you'd have a killer headset!!!!!
I'm betting on Samsung to fill the needs with the help of HTC for a winning design.
any info on if this is 3g or not?
Why didn't anyone comment about the Sony Ericsson logo on the main display and external display of the phone?
I have a feeling that the build quality is lacking... the body looks like a faceplate all around and more thickness than the original RAZR.
Wow. A 2MP camera. I've had that on my K750i for how long? 2 years? Lame.
looks alright. looks a bit longer than the current razr models...the biggest thing they need to change (in my opinion) is the horribly outdated software/menu versions. its so OLD! please motorola update that so you can be up to date in not just phones, but also the internals itself!
Homie needs a MANICURE! The phone kinda reminds me of the old V series.
I will never buy a motorola phone again until they fire the software department. Soon as I saw that it is using the same of peice of crap software they have used for years, no way would I buy this. There software is soo horiable, I can't even believe it.. I think in 5 hours of programming myself, I could do a better job. It's completely beyond me why that have not fired there software department and gone with a more robust system.. It's crazy, anyone who uses this shinney peice of turd will soon find out, they still don't know anything about how to design a proper UI..
Do not even think about buying this phone!.. There software is CRAP!
i'm bored.
I love my black RAZR now. All they needed to do was add iTunes or any music software for it to be the best phone out there. I hate how long this one looks, i actually like the width/lengh on the current RAZR. The only thing I like about this new RAZR is that the side buttons are on the base, not up top. that is my only complant with the current RAZR to me. This one looks really cheap though, even the keypad looks less agressive. And the new screen size sucks. Oh well...maybe they will change it before its released...
Didn't you guys notice the watermarks are on that rounded logo? Puzzling, isn't it? It's kinda trying to hide it or something like that.
Anyways, motorola OS sucks, so no way will I ever get myself a motorola until it's not changed. I'd rather get myself a 6600 then a V3.
it looks a little thicker than the RAZR. i have a RAZR, and i love it, but i think they should go thinner from the side instead of thinner from the front. i love the width of the RAZR, i can't imagine it any thinner across. i would love thinner from the side.
that 'rounded logo' is an 'analog' clock on the display
Kwijibo: Thanks for the awesome info!!!
Any more nuggets you can spare? What kind of expansion slot does it have? What else is new about it besides the 2mp camera and the new formfactor and esthetics? Has the bluetooth profile been updated for more compatibility such as phonebook transfer etc?
Also, what sweet ass slider were you referring to? Brand/model?
I see everyone complaining about the "OS", so what exactly do you think is wrong with it?
Maybe you guys should check out the Verizon RAZRs. The interface is totally different and there's definitely a bunch of stuff on a co-worker's T-Mobile RAZR's UI that would annoy me too. You'd just have to get used to the ugly red band on the top and bottom, but the screen's so big the bands are relatively thin and unobstrusive...
You guys sure this new RAZR isn't just thinner, rather than being longer? It's hard to figure out the scale with that picture. If it's narrower then that's great. I'm not a big fan of the hinge, though. It doesn't look as sleak as the current RAZR.
Moto better come out with some better looking colors. Did we find out if it's GSM or CDMA??
Yo Bart I think this below site will help u get rid of the shitty red bars
http://wiki.howardforums.com/motorola/index.php/Motorola_V3c_Tutorial:_Flashing_to_Alltel_User_Interface
Finally, that horrendous keypad is corrected plus a move towards the sizing of the A900, which is wonderful (which I can confidently say as an A900 owner).
This one seems too late for the market... BenQ-Siemens EF81 (thinner that Razr v3x) is already out in European markets and it rocks. It also has the aluminium finish, UMTS, 2 Mp camera. I can also control the media player and camera without opening the clamshell :)
Much better addressbook too compared to Motorola.
They keep making cool lookin hardware, but the Moto interface and logic is definitely many years behind.
No entry grouping plus the slowest scrolling ever makes for an impossible time retrieving numbers quickly. Even my Nokia from 1999 was way faster.
When I type a 'S' and then a 'T' in the phone book, I want it to go to Stan, not Sarah and then Tabitha. I have 20 names in the 'S' catagory with multiple phone numbers and email addresses. I have to wait forever to get to a number that's not on speed dial.
Oh, and cool keypad, except, when I have the phone to my ear, my finger's not nearly sensitive enough to tell the difference between what buttons I'm on. Samsung and Nokia phones have very clear buttons.
Why doesn't anyone, after all these years, and all these different models, make a phone I want? Thin, small, sturdy, good screen, snappy interface, Bluetooth, external screen and no camera.
so nice!
All of you hating on Motorola's Synergy OS are missing what makes it great. It's by far the most customizable and moddable phone OS on the market today. There's plenty of software mods available for them and just as an example, that phonebook search issue Zach is talking about is just a firmware reflash away from being fixed. Don't blame Motorola, blame the carrier you bought it from for disabling tons of features that it's capable of.
Cheers,

i have the pink razr frm verizon i dont really care for it, ive had mine for appx 1 month an the like first week i had it the screen cracked wehn i tossed it onto my bed, the camera screen on the top has a chip outta it from i have no idea , i almost always have the leather case on it ,, i think they are to long and yeah itunes or mp3 would be hella nice on this phone. its a slow working phone. the pictures take forever to load. i liked it at first but now im really begining to regret the 400.00 i spent on it, i dont recommend this phone at all..
I bought the pink razr from verizon about 20 days ago. I'm so disapointed with verizon for locking every single cool feature there was about the phone. ie: the external display can't be changed (it has an ugly burnt orange-brownish wallpaper), you can't change the home keys (except the down key), you can't set your own themes and color scemes, the camera and pictures takes 30-60 sec just to load, the phone is completly slow. Than last night on accident, my boyfriend dropped a glass of beer on it. No, there was no water damage but the glass fell on the external display screen and it shattered. So now I have a broken phone. I'm going to verizon today to have it fixed but I'm second guessing that now, maybe I'll just trade it in to get another phone... The "hottest" new phone isn't all what it's cracked up to be!
Nice looking phone - but, they should make a Man-version that has a steel-grate surface to it. Please recess those (@#*&@) buttons on the side - or GET RID OF THEM. I can't count how many calls I've missed because the ringtype button on the side of my phone was accidentally pressed and changed to "low" or "vibrate" - unbeknowingst to me.
I agree with Zack (above) "Thin, small, sturdy, good screen, snappy interface, Bluetooth, external screen and no camera.". I don't need a replacement for my home or auto stereo - and I don't need a ticker-tape readout every second of the day. I guess me need categories of phones - Man-phone-basic, Man-phone-deluxe, Ladies-phone-slender-basic, Ladies-phone-cute-deluxe, and then of course - the YoungAdult-phone-gadgetmania-deluxe
There you have it, my friends at Motorola - listen-up!
The razr phone is a beautiful mechanical design; but it has a functionality problem (sound quality sucks), and a total software anurism of an operating system. Actually, the biggest problem I had with it was IT IS DANGEROUS!!! In my pocket the outer lens broke and filled my pocket with shards of SUPER SHARP GLASS!!!! Please guys....go back to the drawing board!
the phone is cool, but they need a new color for it because blue isnt working for it.
I agree, "Thin, small, sturdy, good screen, snappy interface, Bluetooth, external screen and no camera." I do not need all the useless features. I have high quality devices that take care of digital photos and video production. I just need a phone that works dependably is thin and therefore convenient, has a long battery life (very important), and is loud enough for me to hear the other person talking!
If MOT got rid of the frills they could improve the functionality without givingup the sleek style.
The new phone looks very nice but again I hope they adress all the issues above. I know they will not hoever since the trend seems to be do everything phones. Even if it means at lower quality for all the individual tasks.
looks like crap compared to the original razr, the old one in my opinion looked much better. i think that should have been the original razr and the successor should be the normal razr i love.
ummmmmmmmmm...forget the RAZR. The PEBL is a much more sophisticated phone without all the RAZR hype.
젠장 ㅋㅋ
too many slightly sexist comments for one page
I think this Moto is not much of a change in design from all the RaZR, I just hope for Motorola that now their phones will works better! For me it's a synonnym of Sh...
Dude isn't that just a krazr k1? i'm pretty sure it's just a krazr
That's what I was thinking, and couldn't figure out why no one had mentioned it.
This is a picture of the Moto Krzr, not the new Razr.
I was starting to think i was going nuts!
hello
why not motorla company inhanced (develop) the resolution of the cellphons camera to 3 mega pixle?
